I live in Los Angeles on the coast and I am so grateful that I can walk on the beach everyday. That's where I do my thinking and meditating. The water is so relaxing for me. While walking on the beach today I solved an e-mail dilemma and planned our next workshop. It sure is a healing space. We are international consultants! Early this month we have a woman coming from Brazil to train with us so she can learn all about the speaking business and return to her country and train her speakers using our techniques. There is also a discussion about purchasing the rights for our books and audio tapes to be translated. If you are serious about being a speaker or want to jump to the next level you too might consider doing private training in Los Angeles or attend one of our workshops http://speakerservices.com/services/la.html. Our Video Demo Showcase is almost full for October 12. The dates for 2003 are February 8, June 7 and October 4. There will be an increase in the fee of $100. Total fee will be $950 for '03 and $100 discount if paid by December 2. Start planning know as the showcase generally fills quickly. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Susan Levin _______________________________ ALL YOU NEED TO RESEARCH YOUR CLIENT, YOUR SPEECH, YOUR BOOK!! Lilly Walters (AboutNews@aol.com) You might know I have seven books in the marketplace and more to come. The BEST way I have found to do research - economically and fast - is through elibrary. The other services I used often cost me $100 per search! This one costs me $79.95 a year for unlimited searches. Plus, they give you 7 days to try it out for free. This database is MUCH more extensive than the free news services you can find all over the net. eLibrary aggregates thousands of full-text periodicals, nine international newswires, classic books, hundreds of maps, thousands of photographs, as well as major works of literature, art and reference. Their reference materials are from renowned publishers such as Archive Photos, Reuters, Simon and Schuster, Gannett, and Times Mirror, including up to date archives of such periodicals as USA Today, Newsweek, Discover, Forbes, Time, People and Entertainment Weekly. eLibrary also incorporates a host of local, ethnic and special interest publications. If you want to try totally unlimited service for a one month, it is only $14.95. This is the BEST resource I know of. http://ask.elibrary.com/index.asp?refid=lillyw ___________________________________ TIPS AND TRENDS FROM VICKIE SULLIVAN Sullivan Speaker Services: http://www.sullivanspeaker.com HereÕs an interesting opportunity for business growth entre- preneurial/marketing experts: religious markets. Aggressive churches are using commercialism, such as cafes on church grounds to raise funds. Some of the bigger organizations are launching million-dollar advertising campaigns. How to get your foot in the door? Try speaking at minister retreats Ð successful ministers are providing that information now, but there is room for others. Yet another reason all those corporate executives are hitting the speaking circuit: A companyÕs reputation is a major factor for potential hires, according to a recent study by public relations company Cherenson Group. Prediction: public speaking will get as popular as media relations to create goodwill in target markets. This next wave of free experts has already overhauled the criteria for selecting speakers Ð expect a surge of these folks hitting the market within the next two years. Check out http://www.cherenson.com for stats from the study. Also a great source for speeches on the value of reputation/ethics. Another sign that the economy isnÕt bouncing back quickly for the corporate meetings sector: MPIÕs MeetingPowerXchange, billed as the "critical issues conference for corporate meeting professionals" was cancelled due to not getting the minimum number of participants. Despite this setback, MPI will continue offering cutting-edge education featuring high-brand speakers. Their brand depends on itÉ Speaking of MPIÉwaiving the supplier/planner combo requirement paid off, as the associationÕs membership growth sustains an all-time high of 19,000 members. With all the changes in the meetings industry, this association is still solid. Veteran speakers continue to benefit from their national affiliations. With the cutbacks in corporate meetings, government meetings are getting more attention. Always stable business, government meetings are held no matter what and are usually steady in attendance. Speakers should follow suit Ð many associations of government officials have budgets, along with pockets of money at every level, especially federal. Good place to negotiate multiple datesÉ. Another way to get more visibility for your speaking engagementsÉas of May 1, Marriott is offering customized web pages at no cost for events planned at any of their properties. The pages can include links to other sites (such as yours) as well as allowing attendees to reserve rooms online at the negotiated rate. Make sure to ask about it if your speech is being held at a Marriott hotel. Disney Institute is continuing to expand its educational program with two major changes: first, the InstituteÕs campus is now timeshare units for the Disney Vacation Club. Where is the Institute? Taking over the entire resort, including the four theme parks. Secondly, Mickey comes to your office before the event with an extensive on-site review of your methods and practices. Result: a customized program on the Disney way. Prediction: Watch for this kind of customization to become first a competitive factor and then a standard for getting the business. LetÕs close with a great example of the relationship between identity and speaker feesÉActor Robert David Hall, who stars in CBSÕ hit TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is on the circuit as a motivational/inspirational speaker for $5,000 per speech. Somebody needs to talk to him about what heÕs chargingÉ. *********************************************** PROMOTIONS/ADVERTISING RATES: Get your message out to speakers 4,000 plus and meeting planners in this fast growing newsletter. $50 a month, 25-50 words of text and a link to your website,or 6 months for $275 paid in advance.
