Just a short
note to thank you for helping me
to transition painlessly from an author into a public speaker. My goal was to keep the stakes as low
as I could for myself -- so I signed up for the speakers for free section of
Speakers Services. I figured that
my worse case scenario would be that a company would get exactly what they paid
for my presentation -- nothing.
This zero for zero trade-off scenario I could at least live with.
Much to my
surprise and relief --slowly but surely (very slowly) the companies began to
get a lot more than zero. In
fact, one major corporation liked my free presentation so much that they

What Feels
Better -- Promoting Yourself or Helping Others Solve Problems?

Why is it
that, when people ask us what we do, we immediately launch into a
"mini-presentation" or an "elevator speech" about the
solutions we offer? Have you ever thought about what your listeners may be
thinking as you're talking?
Well, how
about if I ask you to put yourself in your listener's shoes? What would your
instinctive reaction be? Maybe, "Hmm, what she does really doesn't apply
to me, but she's seems to enjoy describing her services so I do feel obligated
to pretend to be responsive."
Or, "I
think I might need what he has to offer, but he's so enthusiastic that I'm
afraid to show any interest, because then he'll start really trying to 'sell'
me. And I hate that because it makes me feel pressured and uncomfortable."
The same thing
happens at networking meetings when people stand up to present their solutions
to everyone else in the room. You can almost feel people cringing as they
listen to pitch after pitch. And people feel uncomfortable having to pitch
themselves, too.
The question
is, how can you eliminate the discomfort of feeling that you're always
"selling" yourself?
The best way
is to shift your frame of reference -- stop making it about you and start
making it about others.
How about
taking a few minutes to think about the specific problems your product or service
solves for people?
This can be a
harder task than it appears. Why? Because in traditional selling mode, we've
been trained to start by offering our solution and hoping it will trigger a
conversation that involves the other perso
on's problem
or issue.
Take
cold-calling, for example. Most of us have learned to start with, "Hi, my
name is... I'm with... We are a....and we do..."
The core of
the Reverse Selling™ mindset, on the other hand, is to shift our focus
and pay attention 湯祬琠
only to the
specific problems or issues of the person we're talking with. This can involve
a learning curve, because when I ask my private coaching clients what problems
they solve, their initial replies are typically along these lines:
Speaking: ìI speak about leadership and
motivational topics.î
Technology:
"I help people by providing software
that automates their work environment and makes them more
productive."
Financial:
"I provide financial solutions that help people better plan and secure
their financial future."
Insurance:
"I provide a full set of insurance solutions so people don't have to worry
about their insurance needs."
Coaching:
"I help people through issues that relate to their career and business
growth by providing them with guidance
and support."
Consulting:
"I help improve the efficiencies of running a business to improve cash flow and growth."
But are these
really "problems" -- or simply other ways of describing the solutions
you have to offer? Instead, try these alternatives on for size and see if they
feel more about the other person than about yourself:
Speaking:
ìI address specific issues that are happening in your organization
related to leadership and motivation and customize the presentation so that
people leave with solutions, not just a temporary high from a motivational
speech.î
Technology:
"I help people solve the problem of lost employee records due to manual paper-based
procedures."
Financial:
"I help people identify and fix the hidden financial gaps they may unknowingly have, that will
eventually come back to 'bite' them later when they least expect it."
Insurance:
"I help people to ensure that each specific area of their lives is
protected in the event of a crisis or catastrophe."
Coaching:
"I help people prioritize and commit to open issues in their lives that
they know are holding them back, but aren't exactly sure how to solve them and
move themselves forward."
Consulting:
"I help people diagnose gaps in their businesses related to lost sales and
hidden expenses."
Give yourself
this homework assignment: Make a list of the three core problems that your
product or service helps people solve. Then, when you talk with people, talk
about them rather than yourself and what you have to offer.
You'll find
that your conversations will flow more easily.
Also, you'll
feel good about your ability to help others, and the people you talk with will
feel comfortable and not as if they're being "sold" to.
