A Note from Susan Levin, Speaker Services

Greetings and Happy New Year,

Is your speaker marketing plan in place for '04? Do you know that speaking is the best way to increase your business? Are you at the very beginning of your speaking career and swimming in ideas for your talk and want to learn how to organize or structure your talk? If you are nodding your head yes then you would want to consider Speak Like A Pro Workshop on January 21. In this 4 hour interactive workshop you will learn how to create openings and closings and how to support your points. Storytelling is one of the ways that you can support your points and Jack Barnard, our master teacher shares valuable tips below on storytelling. As Jack says, "We love stories and we learn through the telling of them. Sprinkle your message with stories, anecdotes (analogies and examples) that bring out the flavor of your theme. Stories, anecdotes, jokes and illustrations take the audience by the hand and help them understand what you're saying. Stories deliver the salient points of wisdom. You can tell us the point you're trying to make, and we may understand it, but we get the meaning through stories. We're a storytelling culture."

Marketing Yourself as a Speaker is a workshop offered monthly by me Susan Levin where you will learn the nuts and bolts of the lecture circuit. Next class is January 26. By the way I was interviewed by Antoinette Kuritz and Bob Goodman on Internet Radio for the Writers Roundtable Show. You can listen anytime to the interview as I am talking about Speaker/Author Marketing click on this link to hear the interview http://www.worldtalkradio.com/archive.asp?aid=898.

Want to be more creative and be able to think on your feet? Do not miss the Improv Workshop for speakers, coaches and professionals on January 31.

Are you thinking of creating CD's and streaming audio seminars and have no clue how to do it? How would you like to do your own digital recordings and editing? Probably don't know which equipment to buy right or thinking it is too hard? On Saturday, February 28, Rob Schultz has agreed to show us just how to do it. I have space for 15 people and at the moment have 5 spaces open. Due to the popularity of the February workshop we have scheduled another for Saturday, March 27. It is also offered via Audio Seminar at your convenience especially for those of you not in Los Angeles. Let me know either way what interests you and I will put you in touch with Rob. See full workshop description at the end of the newsletter.

I have about 5-6 openings left for the Video Demo Showcase, March 6. $995 for a 3 camera shoot, 7-8 minute edited piece and an hour of coaching plus a live audience. Call now for your space 310-822-4922.

You know we are in Los Angeles however, we do offer private coaching and have several CD's and Workbooks to help you develop your talks. See http://speakerservices.com/products/index.html for description and details. You may register for seminars at http://www.speakerservices.com/services/la.html or call me at 310-822-4922 for speaker marketing coaching.

ABOUT STORYTELLING by Jack Barnard

Why use stories?

The ability to exchange experiences is at the heart of genuine storytelling

• Forever, we have relied on stories to make sense of our lives

• Stories are the building blocks of knowledge.

• Stories are the playground for language

• Stories offer a deeper understanding of our origins

• Stories teach us how to be human.

• Stories help us know who we are in new and unforeseen ways.

• Stories organize the things that happen to us.

• Stories offer a deeply meaningful and intimate legacy

• Stories create community

• Stories help us to see through the eyes of other people

• Stories show us the consequences of our actions

• Stories educate our desires

• Stories help us dwell in place

• Stories liberate us into a realm of timelessness.

• Stories help us dwell in time

• Stories contradict our extreme isolation

• Stories help us deal with suffering, loss, and death

• Stories acknowledge the wonder and mystery of Creation

We love stories and we learn through the telling of them. We're a storytelling culture.

Checklist of Essential Story Items: Really great stories contain all of the following ingredients.

1 . OPEN THE DOOR. The first sentence of the story should take us to another place or time, or introduce us to someone. Example: "Every summer we go to Maine" or "When I was five" or even "Mr. Smith has a big nose."

2. OPEN THE SENSES. Colorful Crunchy, juicy, smelly, happy, smooth, words. Words which make us see, hear, smell, taste, touch and feel. These descriptive words should convey a MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF THOUGHT IN A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF WORDS.

To find them we must ask the following questions.

a. What did the people and places look like in the story? (tall, short, fat, white, blue red)

b. What sounds were there in the story? (trains, wind, birds) What did the people talk like? ( slow, deep voices)

c. What smells were there in the story? (perfume, bad odors)

d. What did textures feel like ? (Was Bill's beard rough? Was the railing smooth?)

e. How did the people feel in the story? (happy, sad, confused, scared)

3. MAGIC MOMENTS. Really great stories have "MAGIC MOMENTS". A magic moment happens when the storyteller stops telling the story from the narrator's point of view and becomes one of the characters by using that character's voice and body movements. "Magic Moments" provide an opportunity for the storyteller to dust off his or her acting skills!

4. TROUBLE IS COMING. This is also called the build up. What in the story makes you feel that something is going to go wrong? Example: "Sally never made any spelling mistakes." (We know Sally is about to make a mistake)

5. TROUBLE. The crisis or peak moment - Often called the "Once Moment" because the word "once" will always let you know if you have a peak moment. Example: "Once I decided to go down the right fork of the road rather than the left fork." Trouble isn't necessarily a bad thing. Trouble just means that the world we know is turned up-side-down. Trouble in a story can mean we just won the lottery and this is not a bad thing at all.

6. TROUBLE IS OVER. How did the main character get out of the troublesome situation? Example: "Finally John made it to the top of the mountain."

7. CLOSE THE DOOR. Let the listener out of the story with a powerful closing sentence, it could be a moral or simply mention what the main character learned from the story. Example: " Anne decided she would never eat peas again."

Stories develop themes. The themes chosen to illustrate the possibility of stories are:

Relationships, Choice, Creativity, Making a Difference, Celebration

Keep in mind

1) In a speech or presentation, stories must develop a theme

2) A story can be tailored to illustrate various themes. Tailor the stories to the point.

THE LESSON OF GEESE (Illustrates the power of community Could also be about Making a Difference)

Next fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in "V" formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in "V" formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone - and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same way we are.

When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.

Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What messages do we give when we honk from behind?

Finally-and this is important-when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies; and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group.

If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.
