by James Malinchak
A
Message from Susan Levin
Greetings,
June was a busy month for me. I was motivated at the Speakers’ Summit at the beginning of May to create an action plan to generate leads for my services.
Here’s what I accomplished: A blog, a membership site, produced the Speakers’ Summit Teleconference and attended the Quantum Leap Group as a resource for the authors of Steve Harrison’s group.
At the Speakers’ Summit and teleconference Michelle Price showed us how to master marketing web 2.0 the new generation of web interactive content tools and how of these techniques will increase any business. We learned about blogging, podcasting, social bookmarking, social networking, & social media. I learned that you do not have to be a writer to do a blog and that you can take portions of your website or even your audio/mp3’s in blocks of 2-3 paragraphs or articles and post them. I am blogging. See www.speakerservices.wordpress.com to see what is going on behind the scenes at Speaker Services. The blog is called Market Yourself as a Speaker. Michelle told me, “wait till you see the amount of traffic coming your way.” It is happening and when I looked on google I found that at least one hundred references to my website and blog and it has only been 4 days. Well the blog is a work in progress and I am learning something new each day. Just as the veil lifted on web 2.0 Michelle Price said Web 3.0 is on the way- what’s that about!
The Speakers’ Summit Teleconference was a huge success. I interviewed 9 experts and produced 10 MP3’s along with over 150 pages in handouts. If you missed it you can read all about it and purchase the home study course at: http://speakerservices.com/teleclasses/detail/78 .
Here’s a few golden nuggets that I learned: Jack stressed the necessity of being branded and to be able to say what you do in one or two sentences and the importance to stress what the problem is and then how you are going to solve it. He told us about the 3 C’s. Communion. Content and connection and you need the holy triad to have a successful talk. I was relieved to learn from Terry Green, that we don’t have to do everything ourselves. We learned the benefits of hiring a Virtual Assistant.
One of the biggest roadblocks speakers face on the way to the back of the room audio empire is compelling content. Rob Schultz provided us with stellar information and great templates on how to create and market blockbuster audio CD’s. Jean-Noel Bassior talked to us about how to write a book and play the game of publishing and to be a letter, not a package when submitting to literary agents. My pal, Dave Barrett owner of audioacrobat http://speakerservices.audioacrobat.com shared how we can market our businesses more effectively with audio and video content. AudioAcrobat is a powerful and easy online radio and audio and video content development tool. The Software Magician, Paul Wagner told us that Outlook is content management package that performs many functions including importing excel documents into the notes section. Patsy Bellah assured us that we could create a myriad of info-products in an afternoon and gave us a 20 page Special Report that she created with tons of ideas. I delivered information regarding the Business of Speaking.
The membership site Susan Levin’s Speakers’ Community will be launched in September. You can try it for 30 days for free and see how you like it. You can read more about it on my blog www.speakerservices.wordpress.com .
At the Quantum Leap Group we met 60 folks who are part of a year long program learning how to publicize their book's. Steve Harrison invited Jack Barnard and myself to share our skills on branding. media, presentation and marketing with his group. We often times find that authors have a tricky time in telling us in a sentence or two what their book is about and are clueless on how to create a presentation. Several of the folks signed up for the Speakers’ Bootcamp, August 1-5 and a few more for the Video Demo Showcase in November.
The 3rd Annual MediaSpeak Symposium http://www.speakerservices.com/mediaspeak07 is right around the corner, October 11,12 and 13. At this Symposium you learn how to get and use publicity, get media coaching and supercharge your book, screenplay, product, business, service or cause when you talk to the media. On the third day we have a Pitch Fest with real live radio, TV and print folks who are interested in hearing your pitch. Please note there is an early bird registration fee and quite reasonable for the content you will receive. Gayl Murphy of Interview Tactics, returns for the third year to the Symposium and today she shares great tips and tactics which instantly tells people what you’re talking about–what you’re selling, pitching and what you want them to know.
My colleague James Malinchak weighs in today with an article on A Hidden Secret to Growing Your Speaking Business – Attending Live Marketing Seminars! I could not agree more.
Well, I told you a lot here. I am off to NSA Convention in San Diego July 9-12. Jack and I will be in booth 200. Please stop by and say hello to us and see my beautiful redesigned exhibit and we will be showing samples of our video demos too. You can see them too www.speakerservices.com/videoprod.html
Best regards,
Susan Levin

Warning about BurnLounge

What originally appeared to be a no-charge Web service, BurnLounge enabled anyone to set up an audio webstore and share in the profits. It is being sued by the FTC for a fraudulent pyramid scheme. While charges are not a conviction, if you were thinking about using BurnLounge to sell your audio, you had best research this fully before committing to pay for it.

Interview Tactics
- Gayl Murphy Gayl@InterviewTactics.com
I grabbed this from the newswires and refocused it; it was originally written for news writers, but as you’ll see-the rules are the same; whether you’re writing for a newspaper, writing a newsy paper or writing your marketing materials; you still have to TELL IT TO SELL IT!
But what happens when the people you want to reach out to don’t have the time to read your materials? What then?
If you’re writing a newsletter, a report, articles, a blog, an email, pitches, an ‘ezine or even feature stories…one of the best ways to get people to slow down and read your stuff is to: cut through the word-clutter and get to the point as quickly as you can! (What’s your story about?)
What’s the rush you say? Readers! They’re in a hurry! Heck, everyone’s in a hurry!
Whether people are reading or hearing about you from your website, promo materials, emails, podcast, PR releases, videos, reports, memos, whatever-they want to know in an instant if what you have to tell them is worthy of their valuable time.
Here are two quick fixes…
Keep it short and concise, because eyeballs wander especially online.
Why? Because people scan for what interests them. And they make snap decisions-to read or not to read. So use paragraphs that have one or two sentences, and no more than 35 words. Large blocks of text are a total No-No.
FACT: A 2004 Poynter Institute study tracked where a person's eyes looked while reading. The result? Reader’s eyes fix on shorter paragraphs more than twice as often as they did with longer ones.
This is vital when you want someone to read about you, your product, service or business. Remember, eyeballs are constantly in motion.
So grab (and hang on to) your readers attention right from the get-go and chances are in your favor they’ll read you all the way through.
The best way to write successful articles, releases, blog, emails, marketing materials, etc. is by putting your most important factoids right up at the top. Hit the ground running with the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY- leaving the lesser info at the bottom.
This tactics instantly tells people what you’re talking about–what you’re selling, pitching and what you want them to know. It also means their eyeballs are less likely to scan.
This Interview Tactic! will also help you refocus and help you get the point faster and put the most important facts at the top of your story or pitch...where they belong.

As a Correspondent for ABC News and the BBC, she's conducted over 14,000 celebrity interviews in her on-air career. Murphy knows that being interviewed is a give-and-take process and that you've got to PITCH TO PROMOTE IT, so you can TELL IT TO SELL IT! www.InterviewTactics.com

Submit Video for TV
- Joan Stewart jstewart@PublicityHound.com
The June issue of PR Tactics, the newspaper published by the Public Relations Society of America, includes an article I wrote on the popularity of user-generated video for TV newscasts.
I discussed how broadcasters, from your local TV station to major organizations like CNN, rely on material from citizen journalists--even poor-quality video if the story is big enough-- to report the news. Homemade video is particularly appealing to stations that are cutting their news staffs.
Many stations make it easy for people to shoot video with a cell phone camera, then upload it to the stations' websites. Some stations will even let you use your cell phone's message service to send the video as an attachment.
CNN has an entire section at its website at http://tinyurl.com/epwbr that explains 40 different types of video it wants. Everything from how your garden grows to amazing road trips you're taking this summer.
All you frustrated PR people who can't entice TV stations to cover your event: cover it yourself and submit the video. Weekends, in particular, are slow in many TV newsrooms, so your story might have a good chance of getting on the air.

ARTICLE:
A Hidden Secret to Growing Your Speaking Business – Attending Live Marketing Seminars!
By James Malinchak
Recently, I was asked what was one thing that changed my speaking income. Without hesitation I responded, ‘When I decided to take a chance and attend a marketing seminar, rather than a speaking seminar!’ I remember that moment like it was yesterday. There were a few things that concerned me.
The fact that the seminar was about how to market your business and that it wasn’t specifically a speaker-related seminar. I remember other speakers telling me I was crazy for choosing to attend this marketing seminar rather than attend the National Speakers Association’s Annual Convention.
The fact that I was going to spend more on the registration fee to attend this one marketing seminar than I spent on two, even three speaker-related seminars the previous year. And, I was attending a seminar where I didn’t know anyone else. It was me, all-alone attending a seminar in a strange (and uncomfortable) environment.
Looking back, that was the smartest, most-lucrative decision I’ve ever made and is one decision that made me a very wealthy speaker. When I learned what top marketers knew and then simply applied it to my speaking business, my income literally TRIPLED the next year. And, my income has increased EVERY year since attending that first marketing seminar while the amount of time I actually spend traveling, sitting in airports, and being away from home has decreased over the years to where I now only spend about 10-20% of my time traveling to speaking engagements. The majority of my business is now done in the city where I live.
Today, I invest (not spend) a minimum of $20,000-$30,000 each year on attending seminars, going through home study courses and participating in Mastermind Coaching Groups. I even attended a seminar last month that cost $10,000 to attend. If you think investing $20,000-$30,000 a year is a lot, then you must not be making the kind of big money that I want you to be making. And, there’s no reason why you aren’t making this kind of BIG MONEY so that investing $20,000-$30,000 a year in continuing education isn’t even a thought for you.
Here are 3 reasons why you MUST start attending more live MARKETING events immediately:
1) A New Way of Thinking and Acting:
When I was only attending speaker-related seminars, I thought like a speaker. When I began attending marketing-related seminars, I began thinking like a marketer. That is one of the first things I preach to the attendees at my Speaker Boot Camps www.collegespeakingsuccess.com/index_landing.htm and I continue to hammer it home to them all throughout the boot camp. Specifically. I say:
“You’re NOT in the speaking business.
You’re in the business of marketing your speaker services!”
Bottom line is this. If you want to become wealthy as a speaker, while working as little as possible, then you MUST think and act like a Master Marketer. Simply by attending marketing-related seminars, the thoughts and actions of Master Marketers that you are constantly around begin rubbing off on you.
2) Incredible Networking Opportunities:
One of my VIP Platinum Mastermind Inner Circle coaching members once asked me how it is that I got most of the big Internet marketers, top platform selling speakers and big marketers to market my College Speaking Success Boot Camp to their e-newsletter lists when they won’t give most people the time of day. It’s simple. I met all of them at some kind of marketing seminar over the years where they were either speaking or attending.
Prior to attending any seminar, I always make my ‘hit-list’ of people who are speaking and who may be attending that I want to ‘get-in’ with! Then I make sure to do two things: (1) Introduce myself in a memorable way; and (2) Instantly create TOMA (Top of Mind Awareness) so they will always remember me.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret that I haven’t shared with many people. There have been numerous seminars I’ve attended, for no other reason, than to personally meet some of the speakers or attendees who I knew would be there! That’s right! I call it my ‘Attend-To-Get-In’ strategy. I’m always willing to invest in the registration fee just to be in the same room with certain people so I can meet and start a relationship with them. That’s what I mean when I say, ‘Think Like a Marketer, Not a Speaker!’
3) Big Money Marketers Show You How to Play Big:
The quote that has had more impact on my life than any other is Jim Rohn’s quote from years ago. Others have tried to claim it as their own, but it was stated by Jim over 20 years ago. Here it is:
“Statistically you will become the average and your income will become the average of the five people you associate with most!”
I’ll never forget sitting there thinking, ‘Wow! If that’s true then what if I started associating with more than five who are all big money marketers!?!’ Surely their way of thinking and their money-making ideas would rub-off on me. So I made it my goal to associate with as many big money marketers as possible. And, it’s still a core focus that drives my business to this day!
One reason to attend marketing-related seminars to meet some of the guest speakers is because they are usually very accessible at these events. Especially if you invested in yourself by investing in their home study courses. I can’t tell you how many relationships I started with these big money marketers by bumping into them in the lobby, gym, hallway and in the bar. Many deals for promoting my Speaker’s Boot Camps have been made while sitting and having a drink with them at the bar.
Bottom Line…
I’m amazed at how many speakers moan and complain about not making the kind of money they want to make, yet their not willing to do anything differently that’s suggested. Is it a bit frightening to venture outside of your comfort zone to learn more about marketing by attending marketing-related seminars rather than speaking-related seminars? Absolutely! But suck it up and just do it! Can it really make a difference in your income? No! It can make a HUGE difference!
