SELF-PUBLISH YOUR BOOK - OR PLAY THE MAINSTREAM PUBLISHING GAME? Which option is best for you?
You've just signed with a literary agent who can't wait to pitch your book proposal to mainstream publishers. And if they like it? Your agent does a book auction. How thrilling is that? And whether the advance is large or small, you can stroll through Barnes & Noble knowing that in a year and a half, your book will be on the shelf.
A year and a half?
That's right. Of course, it could be sooner if most of the book is completed. But chances are (if it's non-fiction) you've been focusing on the book proposal and sample chapters - because that's what you needed to find an agent or sell it yourself. And when the manuscript's finished (which may take up to a year), you'll be working with your editor at the publishing house to make it better. Then comes copy editing and 3-6 months in production. Still, the wait may be worth it, because when you go mainstream, everything's free: free editorial guidance, free cover design, and free distribution to bookstores around the country.
But what if you don't want to wait that long?
In that case, self-publishing may be the best choice for you. It's instant gratification, and Internet-inspired print-on-demand (POD) has made the old-style "vanity press" obsolete. Pre-POD, you had to order a zillion copies from the printer, for which you paid thousands of dollars for cartons of books that made great makeshift furniture. Contrast that with today's digital printing, when you're just a few hundred dollars away from a book with your name on the cover. But wait: If you self-publish, you've got a huge problem called "distribution." You have to do that yourself (or pay someone to do it), and guess what: The big chain Godzilla bookstores are not huge fans of self-published books.
So should you self-publish or go mainstream? Let's explore which option is best for you at the Speaker's Summit.
